Johns Hopkins University and The City of Baltimore share how they use Amazon Business to support the local community by sourcing from small and diverse businesses.

Large organizations don’t just purchase from large suppliers — they need small businesses, too. Take it from Johns Hopkins University, one of the biggest employers in the City of Baltimore. It takes 5,000 requisitioners to purchase the supplies the university needs — including lab, IT, office and maintenance repair supplies — to conduct its leading research.

By purchasing on Amazon Business, Johns Hopkins University not only gets access to a wide selection of items delivered quickly, but it can choose to buy from small businesses. As part of its HopkinsLocal initiative to promote economic growth in Baltimore and support the local community, the university now purchases from more than 9,000 small businesses on Amazon Business. "By intentionally purchasing locally on Amazon Business, Johns Hopkins has created significant opportunities for small and local businesses here in the city," says Crystal Burns, Small Business and Supplier Diversity Lead at Johns Hopkins University.

Johns Hopkins collaborates on ideas and best practices with the City of Baltimore, another powerhouse purchaser. The city is responsible for procuring essential day-to-day items for more than 50 departments and offices, including the police department, fire department, court system, and parks and recreation.

Amazon Business makes it easy for the two organizations to search for suppliers based on certifications, so they can find thousands of local businesses that they wouldn’t have had access to otherwise. And they can purchase from diverse suppliers, including minority-, woman- and veteran-owned businesses.

Small businesses can supply these Baltimore institutions and ship quickly thanks to the logistics support of the local Amazon Fulfillment Center. The center helps small businesses scale their operations so they can meet the needs of large buyers and focus on growing their businesses.
